ABOUT MY BLOG:
If renowned author Timothy Ferriss is 'The 4-Hour Guy', I’m 'The 90% Guy' - because, after 30 years of observing, listening and guiding, I see that at least 90% of people are in the wrong job, or totally disengaged from their work. And there are too many people, workers, employers, policymakers, parents and communities who don't appreciate what we're all missing out on when we don't encourage ourselves and others to maximise our potential!
That’s the unsparing truth I’ve found, sitting with thousands of people across kitchen tables, boardrooms, workshops, outplacement centres, shoreline rambles and coaching calls. For most of us, work is not a place of self-expression, purpose, or pride - it’s a poor fit that drains, frustrates, or simply numbs our daily grind en route towards our paycheque. Few say this out loud - but I insist on it - our World of Work is overdue for a complete overhaul, and I’ve made it my mission to spark one.
Why does this matter to me? Because it’s personal.
I’ve endured the consequences - burning through 35 jobs before I uncovered my true vocation, navigating every imaginable adversity, from grief, abject failure, financial ruin, illness, family break-up, the upheaval of radical change and self-doubt, to the hard-won and very tangible realisation that fit, meaning and fulfilment aren’t luxuries of livelihood, they’re essential ingredients of lives well-lived.
Add into the mix three decades as a career guidance practitioner, married to two decades experience as a sports coach, and organisational development consultant - and you see why “fit before fortune” isn’t just branding for me. It’s the difference between despair and possibility, hope and actuality, wishing and owning, nagging self-doubt and conviction of purpose, both for individuals and for society... as a whole.
What is Good Being?
Good Being is my answer to so many of the issues I observe that hold us back as the human collective - and it's my invitation. It’s not another “hack-your-life” blog, but a practical, philosophical, purpose-driven home for those who are compelled to ask:
-
Who am I, really - and why doesn’t my work reflect that?
-
How do I move from stuck to 'flow' in my working life?
-
What skills, values, and unique aptitudes are waiting to be set free?
-
Why is it that almost everyone I meet - 90% of people - at least by my life’s tally - are in the wrong role?
Here you’ll find stories, provocations, invocations and tools for refusing what isn’t working and recrafting your own Meaning of Life map. I honour individuality, pause for deep reflection, and demand we push beyond profit, conformity, and this mired 'one-size-fits-all' approach; especially in policymaking. Where I fear politicians' are focussed on the wellbeing of organisations, not the wellbeing, empowerment and fulfilment of citizens relying upon them for far more than a wage.
On using AI:
So as not to be misjudged as the hypocrite, everything meaningful here originates with me - my story, my questions, my frameworks, my vision, my solutions, my ideas. Occasionally, I leverage AI to unearth research, generate clean visuals, issue PR, or proofread my writing to enhance clarity. Sometimes, a bit of algorithmically-driven 'thinking partnership' helps me dig for deeper patterns or possibilities, and far more quickly to boot. I would have to admit to being more productive since I employed AI in this way. But the DNA - the voice, the message, and every challenge my intention is set to overcome - remains fully human and my own. Consequently, this is a purposeful, hands-on project; if it sounds authentic, that’s because it was always intended to be so.
If the '90% problem' resonates - if you’re stuck, restless, disengaged, hurting or convinced there’s more to "love, life and livelihood" than ticking boxes - you’ve have come to the right place.
Pause here. Please do stay a while. Own your questions. Reach out, connect, and reclaim the part of you still waiting to be set free, fly high and fit. Above all, learn to value your authentic Self. Because without that keystone in place in our lives, the best we can do is run away from who were always meant to be - the Good Being.
Peace, purpose, positivity & perseverance,
Duncan
